To get this forum going and to generate discussion, over a reasonable period of time, I will publish here the various chapters of the current book and new chapters as they come to mind. Security Deposit 'Issues' Do you know that, in Chicago, if you are covered by the Chicago Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance (hereinafter called the 'RLTO'), that your security deposit must be placed into a separate, interest bearing account in a financial institution in Illinois? Did you know that you are to be paid interest on your security deposit every twelve months of the term of your lease, and that you are to get a receipt for your security deposit? And, did you know that damages are payable to a tenant if a landlord violates the requirements of the said RLTO? Evictions in Cook County Evictions are a freightening experience for tenants. And, with almost 40,000 evictions every year in Cook County, Illinois, the trial in an eviction case is quick. Tenants without lawyers who attempt to 'try' their own case in the eviction courts are up against impossible barriers and seldom win their cases. This is not because they don't have a winning case, but because non-lawyers just do not know what they can do to defend themselves and how to do it.
